In 1983, Natas Kaupas won a Santa Monica Airlines skateboard as a prize in a surfing contest. He then approached Skip about joining the skate team, which didn't exist. Skip was impressed and offered to sponsor Natas. They partnered with NHS (Santa Cruz Skateboards & more) in the mid eighties, where the name was shortened to SMA. NHS closed the brand around 1993 and the skate team was absorbed into other brands.

SMA Offshoots

An offshoot of the brand was SMA Rocco Division, which changed into SMA World Industries, and then just World Industries. The brand was led by Steve Rocco and made their first run of 500 boards in 1988. Skip is now back doing his thing.

Team of Legends

Over the years many famous skateboarders rode or still ride for SMA such as Jay Adams, Natas Kaupas, Julien Stranger, Tim Brauch, Lizzie Armanto, Jesse Martinez, Alan Peterson, Andrew Currie, Jason Adams, Frank Hirata and Mike Conroy.
