Editor’s Note: This interview was done back in summer and recently transcribed….a brief, rare insight to Dill’s mind.
So what’s going on with you, Dill?
Currently in New York, just got back from Australia four days ago. Spending Mother’s Day with my mom.
Living in NY for the past 2 years, you disappeared to LA. Why?
I had to find a new shoe sponsor.
What’s the difference from NY to L.A.? for you lifestyle wise and skate-wise?
I’m not the type of guy to drive all day to do a 12-stair rail. I like to skate around NY and hit some good spots.
So overall, what do you like better? NY or LA?
I think NY for skating and in general because there are so many other things to do. I live in the main mix and can walk outside and do what I want.
You are well known for talking about the music you are into, especially Radiohead. Does that influence your skating?
To a certain extent. It’s really just noise I like to listen to. When I was in Australia recently a kid came up to me and had me sign a Radiohead CD that had my video part song on it. (Polyethelene part 2)
Did that get you psyched?
Definitely, because that song is a B-side to a single and is really hard to find, so it showed me a lot about that kid.
With there being so many ways for a kid to get coverage, do you think it is a good thing or a bad thing that it seems to be getting saturated?
I think things have become so big and pros spend so much time on getting the hardest tricks that there are spaces to fill. All the magazines need stuff so they use what is available. Basically, no matter who you are, if you backside noseblunt a 15-stair rail, somebody is gonna shoot it and film it.
With kids like Pappalardo, P-Rod (Paul Rodriguez) and Evan Hernandez being so good so young, do you feel pressure as a veteran pro?
Not really, but you still have to step it up as an older pro. I mean Pappalardo is flipping into tricks that I ollie into. It is definitely sobering.
What do you think about your skating in the Trilogy video (early 101 video) as opposed to Photosynthesis?
Trilogy was a serious deal of planning out things and working where as now everyone (skaters) is doing a lot of the same stuff so I just have to add my own flair to it.
Last words?
You might have been around the world and seen a lot of stuff, but most people don’t see what’s outside the hotel room.
